The Steller's Sea Eagle (Haliaeetus pelagicus) is a bird of prey of the sea eagle genus. It is the largest sea eagle and has a black and white plumage. It can be easily recognized by the extraordinarily large and strong orange-yellow beak and its paddle-shaped wings. Steller's Sea Eagle live on the rivers and coasts of Russia near Pacific as well as in wintering areas on Hokkaido, Japan's largest island. The body length is up to 105 centimeters, the wingspan up to 2.80 meters. Males weigh 4.9 to 6.0 kilograms, females that are larger, 6.8 to 9.0 kilograms.
We drove for a day at Rausu with a view of the Russian Kuril Islands in search of the giant sea eagles until we discovered a magnificent specimen in a tree top.
Full braking, tripod set up and the Nikkor in position - it only took seconds and we had the most beautiful pictures of our model eagle in the box.
